Kick-off public event
GRID aims to develop an innovative, integrated approach to addressing the climate crisis in urban environments through the creation of “green routes” and smart, sustainable interventions in city neighbourhoods. The project is a collaborative initiative between the Municipalities of Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros and the following partners: Thymios Papayannis and Associates, GET (Geospatial Enabling Technologies), commonspace, Institute for Alternative Policies – ENA, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).
The project integrates participatory processes and advanced technological tools to address one of the most pressing urban challenges in Southern Europe: extreme heat. These municipalities are key strategic hubs within the Athens metropolitan area linking the city centre to the regenerating Faliron Bay waterfront, an area undergoing major redevelopment aligned with the principles of the New European Bauhaus (NEB). GRID’s ambition is to develop scalable, adaptive heat risk management solutions that promote climate-friendly urban investments, spatial planning, and continuous digital services tailored to community needs.
A key element of GRID is participatory governance, achieved through digital platforms that integrate real-time IoT data, AI-driven insights, and co-creation with residents via AR/VR and public participation Web GIS (ppWebGIS) tools. Expected outcomes include reduced urban heat, enhanced thermal comfort, improved urban resilience, and strengthened connectivity, particularly between Athens and the waterfront, through investments in local green route networks. This holistic approach promotes sustainable urban growth and builds climate-resilient communities.
The event will include opening remarks from official representatives of the two Municipalities (such as the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and other officials). This will be followed by a presentation by the project manager, along with contributions from the project partners. The session will conclude with a moderated discussion, during which the event coordinator will pose key questions and engage speakers in dialogue.
