GRID - Green Routes Intelligent Districts

Technology in cities

Ongoing

GRID (Green Routes Intelligent Districts) is a collaboration between the municipalities of Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros to redesign public spaces and tackle extreme heat. Using participatory methods and advanced digital tools, the project targets urban risk hotspots with limited green space and vulnerable populations. It addresses overheating, social inequality, poor connectivity and low climate tech capacity. Innovative solutions include smart infrastructure, green corridors, mobile apps and local capacity building, creating scalable tools for resilient, equitable urban development across Europe.

Our main challenges...

  • Urban Overheating and Social Inequality - High land surface temperatures, limited green areas, and vulnerable populations intersect to create urban heat risk hotspots with stark environmental and social disparities.

  • Poor Urban Connectivity for Non-Motorised Transport - Disconnected street networks and limited infrastructure for walking and cycling hinder sustainable mobility and reduce access to public spaces, especially for underserved communities.

  • Limited Technological Capacity for Climate Adaptation - Local authorities lack the tools, data systems and technical resources needed to effectively plan, implement and monitor climate adaptation strategies in high-risk urban zones.

and proposed solutions

  • Smart infrastructure – including weather stations, an AR/VR lab and a digital Heat Adaptation & Urban Planning Platform – to inform climate adaptation strategies integrating real-time IoT data, AI insights and co-creation with residents.

  • Green corridors – implemented through a scalable Green Routes Masterplan – improving connectivity and sustainable mobility, combined with nature-based solutions to reduce urban heat island effects.

  • User-friendly, open-source mobile apps to enhance access to services, promote civic participation, and support vulnerable groups with real-time information and inclusive design.
