Co.nTe - Co-creating Madeira's Climate-Adapted Future with Novel Technology Schemes

Technology in cities

Ongoing

The Co.nTe project aims to co-create Madeira’s climate-adapted future using innovative technologies. Led by the Municipality of Câmara de Lobos, it tackles urban land degradation in three municipalities on the south coast of Madeira – Câmara de Lobos, Calheta and Ribeira Brava. Through generative AI and participatory governance, it promotes sustainable agriculture and resilience via a Societal Token scheme, Resilience Living Lab, and Tech for Land Use programme. It engages diverse stakeholders to foster social, ecological and economic sustainability.

Our main challenges...

  • Due to climate change and unsustainable agricultural practices, rapid urban and peri-urban land degradation in Câmara de Lobos, Calheta and Ribeira Brava is threatening ecosystems and food security. Effective land use solutions are needed.

  • Limited adoption of advanced technologies in agriculture is hindering climate resilience and productivity in Madeira’s urban and peri-urban areas. There is a need to modernise practices and support sustainable local food systems.

  • Insufficient stakeholder engagement and participatory governance in Madeira’s urban planning limits community-driven solutions. The area lacks inclusive frameworks for co-creating sustainable land use and climate adaptation strategies.

and proposed solutions

  • The Societal Token scheme incentivises sustainable land use through a digital financial model, engaging landowners and businesses in Madeira to adopt climate-resilient practices, supported by AI-driven land use simulations.

  • The Resilience Living Lab serves as a hub for innovation, fostering co-creation of urban planning and agri-food solutions, enhancing stakeholder capacity, and promoting sustainable practices through workshops and exhibitions.

  • The Tech for Land Use programme deploys advanced technologies to modernise agriculture, supporting local food chains with precision tools and renewable energy, improving productivity and climate resilience in Madeira’s urban areas.
