ReGreenX Festival Brings Green Ideas to Szeged
Climate change is no longer a distant threat in Szeged. Rising temperatures and drier conditions are taking a toll on plants that once thrived in milder, wetter weather, and the city’s trees are particularly vulnerable. The ReGreenX project was created to tackle this challenge, identifying resilient plant species that can adapt to changing conditions while making the city more livable and verdant for everyone.
Festival-goers were treated to insights from scientists, horticultural experts, university lecturers, and a gardening blogger. Tamás Gál examined Szeged’s shifting climate and the challenges it poses for urban vegetation, while Ágnes Gulyás explored the philosophy behind ReGreenX, engaging the audience with playful activities that brought green thinking to life. Kriszta Szabó revealed the “secret life of climate trees,” showing how urban conditions affect the hidden workings of our leafy neighbors.
Participants also had the chance to learn from Szabolcs Megyeri about plant species that could thrive long-term despite the city’s changing environment. The day wrapped up with a lively panel discussion, where experts—including gardeners, ecologists, and the advisor for the Green City Program—debated how Szeged can stay green and livable in a world of shifting climates.
Alongside the talks, numerous exhibitors offered hands-on experiences and information about green initiatives. Visitors explored booths from Csemete, Komposztfutár, Élményséta Szeged, the ReGreenX team, Kék Elefánt, SZKHT, the Chamber of Commerce, Erdőmentők, Vackorkert, Mediterrán Farm, and Cool Life Szeged.
Even before the festival, residents had a glimpse of the project at Klauzál Square, where a striking exhibition of dead trees highlighted the urgent issue of urban vegetation loss—reminding everyone that green cities require attention, care, and collective action.
