ZEROit - Holistic portfolio planning tool and rapid zero-emission renovations to advance the energy transition of buildings and achieve urban climate goal targets

Energy transition

Ongoing

The ZEROit project aims to solve the City of Nuremberg’s energy transition challenges using a holistic approach that is highly replicable. Core strategies include transitioning to high-efficiency active systems, with solutions such as introducing heat pumps, reducing energy demand, integrating renewable energy sources, and enhancing grid flexibility. Together, these measures can enable cities to accelerate renovation efforts, overcome systemic barriers, and effectively reduce emissions.

Our main challenges...

  • The complexity of monitoring and analysing the entire building stock to make optimal investment choices that take into account the condition of individual buildings, city planning regulations and environmental changes.

  • The complexity of planning and integrating various systems in individual buildings and multiple renovations, while taking financial and personnel restraints into account.

  • A lack of local contractors capable of integrating multiple systems and trades.

and proposed solutions

  • An innovative Holistic Portfolio Planning Tool (HPP-Tool) that facilitates optimal investment decisions and complex planning despite limited resources. The tool integrates data for the entire stock, providing city-wide analysis and multiple automated planning features.

  • Rapid Zero-Emission Renovation (RAZE-Renovation) approach, which uses off-the-shelf technologies for small and medium-sized buildings, minimising costs while preparing for future envelope improvements.

  • Focus on building stakeholder and citizen capacity for uptake, including a trial of the HPP-Tool in a One-Stop-Shop (OSS).
