EU Cities connect: fostering culture, sustainable tourism and urban development
Key learnings
- Focus on improving the city’s alternative tourism offer, and on experiences – such as the ‘pesto experience’ – which can connect tourists more strongly with the soul and heritage of the city.
- Protect and promote local shops, both as attractions for tourists and as a way to bring value and support to local craftmanship and skills.
- Ensure the local tourism strategy not only values cultural heritage but also preserves the local lifestyle. Local identity can be a positive factor in attracting visitors and creating new types of experiential tourism activities.
- Work on preserving and promoting the co-existence between old and new architectural styles as a way to promote the active use of public spaces and buildings in the city centre and make it vibrant not only for tourists but also for residents.
“This exchange of knowledge and practices really improved the capacities and skills of the officials involved – particularly useful for the operational aspects of our work on sustainable tourism. It also helped developed excellent relations for future cooperation between Genoa and Prague.”
