EU Cities connect: fostering culture, sustainable tourism and urban development

As a cruise departure point and destination for city breaks and cultural tours, Genoa is experiencing a surge in tourism, with visitors mainly staying in the already densely populated city centre. Despite various policies – and multi-level cooperation – the city still faces challenges such as over-tourism and public space insecurity. Looking for advice and solutions to preserve local identity while benefiting both visitors and residents, Genoa turned to Prague, a fellow UNESCO heritage city experienced in sustainable tourism. Through study visits and talks, Genoa also explored how Prague manages its night-time economy, improving services and maintaining cultural vibrancy.
