Bee Path Cities - creating cities that are good for pollinators and therefore good for people
Just 16 km from central Lisbon, the municipality of Oeiras has opted to support beekeeping as part of its Biodiversity Strategy. It aims to promote bee pollination, environmental education, and local, sustainable honey products. Actions include planting pollinator-friendly flowers, reducing pesticide use, fighting the Asian hornet, and working with schools and research institutions. But challenges remain – not least in persuading local residents of the benefits of urban beekeeping. For inspiration and practical advice, Oeiras looked to Ljubljana’s successful Bee Path programme, with a City-to-City Exchange including visits to both cities.
