Presentation of the Preliminary Design for Plejadensquare
In recent months, we have worked with several partners on a preliminary design. In doing so, we also listened to ideas from residents and local business owners. There was space to respond to the design, ask questions, and engage in discussion with the Ground for Wellbeing project team.
Preliminary Design for Plejadensquare
Research
The first part of the meeting focused on research into the soil and the use of Plejadensquare. Soil research was carried out to map the structure of the ground. We learned that the soil is healthy, but also too compacted to absorb rainwater properly. As a result, trees and plants struggle, and waterlogging occurs quickly.
We know that greater biodiversity reduces the likelihood of pests (an overabundance of one species). A lively soil also becomes looser and more aerated, allowing it to absorb more rainwater. In addition, research is being conducted into how animals - such as birds, hedgehogs, insects and worms - as well as residents use the square throughout the year. The results of these studies form the basis for the new design, both above and below ground.

Preliminary plans
Over the past six months, the neighborhood has participated in various ideas sessions in which wishes and ideas for the redevelopment were discussed. In addition, the project team went out into the streets to approach residents directly and ask for their opinions on the plans. This resulted in a great deal of valuable input, including:
- More seating for users of the paddling pool
- Additional shaded areas
- Further greening of the square
- Good play facilities for children, young people and older adults
- Accessibility with ramps for walking frames and prams
- Improved walking routes
- Keeping bicycles and fat bikes off the square
- A layout that can be better used by institutions around the square
- A square that is attractive and usable throughout the year
In the final part of the meeting, the draft design was presented. We regularly organize meetings for the neighborhood. Keep an eye on the website for the latest updates.

What Ground for Wellbeing does
The redesign of Plejadensquare is part of the Ground for Wellbeing project, which focuses on the Tuindorp Oostzaan neighborhood in Amsterdam. The soil conditions in this area are challenging. The neighborhood has to deal with a high groundwater level, and the soil is weak, which can cause streets, pavements and houses to subside. This leads to water nuisance, mold growth and health issues.
With Ground for Wellbeing, we aim to make a start on improving the soil in Tuindorp Oostzaan, reducing water nuisance, creating more greenery that can better withstand both wet and dry conditions, and ensuring a pleasant and safe place for everyone.
