Galway City
WATERWAY - Water And Tourism Energy Resources for a Winning Active Galway
Location
The WATERWAY project will be implemented in Galway, a vibrant Atlantic coastal city in the West of Ireland. Characterised by rivers, canals and a tidal estuary, Galway’s urban waterways offer a unique setting to pilot small-scale hydropower. As a Pilot City in the EU’s NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Programme Galway is committed to climate neutrality by 2050 and ideally placed to showcase how public infrastructure can drive integrated, renewable and scalable climate action.
Urban authorities
Galway City Council (GCC) leads the WATERWAY project as the Main Urban Authority, managing the overall implementation, financial coordination and partnership governance. GCC will oversee the delivery of the small-scale hydropower pilots, manage reinvestment planning and ensure regulatory alignment. It also coordinates stakeholder engagement, supervises procurement, and leads monitoring and reporting activities across work packages.

IrelandTransfer partners
Transfer Partners are urban authorities that join the EUI-Innovative Action project to observe and learn. Their primary aim is to enhance the adaptability of the project's solutions to different urban contexts within the EU. These partners play a crucial role in facilitating knowledge exchange among EU cities and fostering innovation. They come from different EU member states than the project Main Urban Authority and participate during the project's implementation phase. Each project generally involves three Transfer Partners. The involvement of Transfer Partners is vital for ensuring the project's innovative solutions are effectively adaptable and replicable in various contexts across the EU.
