ImperfectCity - The Imperfect City: Embracing the Imperfectness of Buildings and People to Create a Good City for Everyone

New European Bauhaus

Ongoing

About the project

Young people facing growing stress about failure while striving for excellence are subject to increasing mental health issues such as anxiety, loneliness and depression. In Aarhus, some 18 000 to 24 000 residents aged 14-30 are affected. Kulturhus Bunkeren, a Brutalist-style building saved from demolition, is being adapted to host social and employment services for young people prone to mental health issues. It will also act as a local community centre. Actions include improving the building’s climate-proofing and attractiveness.

This solution is based on changing mindsets and reducing the stigma of Brutalist buildings, and social challenges associated with mental health. Brutalist architecture is often considered unattractive and unappealing, leading to a lack of support for its preservation. Mental health patients may also be marginalised, reducing their chances of participation in society and the labour market. ImperfectCity tackles these problems by connecting Brutalist buildings with Art Brut and the needs of mentally vulnerable youth, enhancing urban inclusiveness, sustainability and beauty.

Challenges

The city of Arrhus is working to break the culture of perfection, creating an area that celebrates diversity, where everyone feels welcome. Answering a need for new solutions to complex social challenges, ImperfectCity is testing new forms of collaboration between businesses, citizens and associations.

By using the renovation of Kulturhus Bunkeren as an opportunity to showcase the beauty and potential of imperfection, this ambitious project has the potential to make a positive difference at many levels.

  • The architecture of the Kulturhus Bunkeren building is often criticised and misunderstood. A challenge is to renovate it in a way that preserves its unique Brutalist style.

  • There is a need to break down the stigma associated with mental illness and promote a more inclusive understanding of diversity. ImperfectCity is providing a platform for young people with mental vulnerability to share their stories and experiences.

  • How to build a more collaborative and supportive community where everyone feels valued and empowered? ImperfectCity brings people from different backgrounds and sectors to work together on solutions to complex social challenges.

Proposed solutions

ImperfectCity is a reminder that we do not have to be perfect to be worthy of love, respect, and belonging. The project is working to create a space where everyone feels valued and accepted, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances.
Here are some specific examples of how ImperfectCity is challenging the culture of perfection.

  • Renovating Kulturhus Bunkeren in a way that preserves its unique character and makes it more accessible and inviting for everyone.

  • Creating jobs and communities for young people with mental vulnerability, who are often marginalised and excluded.

  • Testing new forms of collaboration between businesses, citizens and associations, which can help to break down silos and create a more cohesive community.
